Who is Editing Alchemy?

Meet your editor

Hi, I’m Gennifer Schroeder, and I’m the editor behind Editing Alchemy. My story starts as a frustrated reader, passionate about the stories I was consuming, and disappointed that books with such incredible potential were published in haste, littered with errors that dislodged me from my immersion in a fictional world. These were beautiful stories, written by obviously skilled authors, but their stories became obscured behind the mistakes on the page. After being granted the opportunity to wield the red pen for a friend, I realized I could be the editor I wished to see in the world. I could protect those characters and stories I enjoyed against the scrutiny of pedantic readers (admittedly, like me) and their scathing reviews.

With these lofty goals in mind, I earned a certificate in editing and developmental editing specialization from the University of Washington in Seattle, honing and formalizing my editorial base of knowledge. I continue to value furthering my understanding of storytelling and have been immersing myself in the craft of writing ever since. My favorite part of editing is collaborating with authors as we work together to shape their work into the book of their dreams.

When I’m not reading for work, I still make time to enjoy reading for leisure, often listening to audiobooks while I make crafty things, putter around my garden, or cook up a storm. I enjoy everything from sewing and crocheting to origami and bullet journaling, and I’m trying desperately not to pick up hand-bookbinding. I live and work in the suburbs of Seattle, where you’ll find me exploring local bars and breweries (often in conjunction with Silent Book Club events), enjoying the many green spaces the Pacific Northwest has to offer, and spending time with my foodie spouse and our furry children: a hundred-pound lapdog and a sixteen-pound feline demon.
